Lindisfarne and Farne Islands Cruise
We travel to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, one of the foremost religious sites in the world, where Saint Aidan established a monastery in 635AD. We also enjoy a boat trip to the Farne Islands, a fantastic trip for bird-watchers, where the many species include puffins. There are also colonies of grey seals.
Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall
Visit the attractive market town of Hexham for a lunch break. In the afternoon, we explore nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Begun in AD122 to stop raids from the Pictish tribes in the north, the wall was the edge of the Roman Empire. Today large sections remain and we visit Chester’s (English Heritage, admission extra), one of the best preserved forts, with a fine collection of Roman ‘finds’.
Morpeth on Market Day and Newcastle
We make a morning visit to the attractive town of Morpeth on Wednesday, which is market day. You’ll be greeted by a host of the friendly, knowledgeable traders selling a wide range of locally sourced fresh produce, handmade goods and unique gift ideas. We return to Newcastle for free time. The hotel is ideally located for exploring the town, being within walking distance of the famous riverside bridges and Eldon Square shopping.
