Medieval York
Today is free for you to explore the ancient and historic City of York at your own leisure. There are lots of things to see and do – The National Railway Museum, The Jorvik Centre, The Castle Museum, stroll around the City Walls or Shambles, wander around the excellent shops, explore the many quaint little alleyways and of course, no visit to York is complete without seeing magnificent York Minster.
Knaresborough and Harrogate
This morning we start with a visit to Knaresborough, where we can view Knaresborough Castle a ruined fortress overlooking the River Nidd and a stronghold of medieval kings. From here we head to Harrogate for free time. Harrogate boasts the world-famous Betty’s tearooms, founded in 1919 by a Swiss confectioner. This afternoon enjoy a stroll through the lovely Valley Gardens and maybe Afternoon Tea at Betty’s or visit the Royal Pump Rooms Museum to find out why Charles Dickens said that ‘Harrogate is the queerest place with the strangest people in it, leading the oddest lives’.
The World of James Herriot and Ripon
We journey to Thirsk this morning where we visit ‘The World of James Herriot’. This fascinating tour includes many of the props and three studio sets as featured in the long running TV series based on the life and times of local vet Alf Wright. After our visit, enjoy some free time to browse the marketplace before we travel to Ripon, with its magnificent cathedral.
