Board one of the trams, horse-drawn carts or trains and visit the 1900s traditional sweet shop or explore the 1940s wartime farm, disappear down into the 1900s mine at the pit village.
Whitby
We spend the day exploring the charming coastal town of Whitby, famed for its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and for its striking jet jewellery. Wander around the busy harbour before tackling the climb up to the atmospheric ruined abbey perched on the cliffs above the town. Whitby was also once the home of the famous explorer Captain Cook, who lived here as an apprentice.
At leisure in Durham
Durham is dominated by a Norman castle and cathedral. The castle was built in 1071 by William the Conqueror and was later the seat of the Bishops of Durham. The cathedral is mighty and dominates a sharp bend in the River Wear.
Excellent large hotel adapted from a series of Jacobean town houses, with parts dating from 1630, in a wonderful location on the banks of the River Wear. The hotel is centrally located about half a mile from the cathedral. Through Durham’s cobbled streets, explore this unique city’s blend of old and new with shops, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.
