Berwick-upon-Tweed and Bamburgh Castle
We travel to Berwick-upon-Tweed, the most northerly town in England, which has a colourful history, being fought over by the English and Scots for hundreds of years and has changed sides on 14 occasions. In the afternoon we visit Bamburgh Castle. Once home to the kings of ancient Northumbria, the castle is one of Britain’s most iconic buildings. The castle has 14 public rooms and more than 2,000 artefacts, including arms and armour, porcelain, furniture and artwork.
Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum
We travel south into County Durham and visit the attractive market town of Barnard Castle. Later, we visit The Bowes Museum, a magnificent collection of fine and decorative arts housed inside a French Style chateau, set in lovely grounds. You can see the Museum’s iconic 250-year-old Silver Swan back in action every day at 2.00pm, after being restored recently.
Morpeth on Market Day and Newcastle
We make a morning visit to the attractive town of Morpeth on Wednesday, which is market day. You’ll be greeted by a host of the friendly, knowledgeable traders selling a wide range of locally sourced fresh produce, handmade goods, and unique gift ideas. We return to Newcastle for free time.
